As many of you know, Memphis Pets Alive! has an active TNR program here in the Mid-South. Back in June, our dedicated volunteers participated in “Don’t Be a Daddy Day!” and it was a huge success!
We spayed 16 females and neutered 11 males. These 27 cats will no longer contribute to the overpopulation in Memphis!
THANK YOU to Dr. Monica Schoknecht at Arlington Animal Clinic for volunteering her time and expertise for this event.
THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers for spending your Friday and Saturday trapping, assisting at the clinic, and helping with recovery.
This is just one of the many events MPA! sponsors and participates in across the region to work towards our mission! You can discover more about TNR here.

One of the many features Memphis Pets Alive! brings to the mid-south is our pet pantry which helps provide food and other essentials to pets in need. Every week there are dedicated volunteers handing out food, making home visits and assisting in any way possible to help ensure that animals are not suffering throughout our community. Recipients of assistance from the pet pantry must complete an application and demonstrate need in order to qualify for our temporary assistance.
The following are the stats for the amazing work the pet pantry has done over the last quarter:
September: 32 homes visited, 8 feral colonies served, 95 dogs served, 51 cats served, 3,672 pounds of dog food distributed, 438 pounds of cat food distributed, 9 new recipients!
October: 45 homes visited, 5 feral colonies served, 102 dogs served, 58 cats served, 3,843 pounds of dog food distributed, 445 pounds of cat food distributed, 7 new recipients!

The casual person reading this dog post is more than likely confused by it and maybe even a bit apprehensive. But they should not be. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a wonderful and humane program that has been proven to be life saving and effective. Community cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, eartipped (the universal marking that a cat has been vaccinated, neutered, and released), and then the cat is returned to their community, free to roam once more. TNR reduces and stabilizes the cat population. The breeding cycle is stopped, complaints about cats reduced, and the quality of life for these cats is enhanced.
Memphis Pets Alive! is on a list with a national organization focused on TNR, Alley Cat Allies and occasionally we will receive a call from Alley Cat requesting assistance on TNR in our area. One such request came a couple of weeks ago in West Memphis, and MPA! volunteers sprung into action!
Four cats (Chandler, Joey, Rachel, and Phobes) were humanely trapped and taken to Mid-South Spay and Neuter services to begin their TNR journey. The endeavor was successful and beneficial for Chandler, Joey, Rachel, Phobes, and the West Memphis community.
