The Champions with Memphis Pets Alive

The Champions is an inspirational story about the pit bulls rescued from the brutal fighting ring of former Atlanta Falcon’s star quarterback Michael Vick, and the organizations who risked everything to save them, despite pressure from PETA and The Humane Society of the United States to euthanize the dogs. It is a story of second-chances, redemption and hope. This uplifting documentary takes us on a journey about much more than just dogs—about prejudice, being misunderstood, the power of resilience, and the significance of the relationship we as humans have with animals. Featuring the lifesaving work of Best Friends Animal Society.

Meet Maddy

This is a story from the archives of Memphis Pets Alive! and not a currently adoptable dog. We feel that this story embodies what we do here at Memphis Pets Alive! and therefore, we wanted to share Maddy’s story with you. Enjoy.

Maddy Shelter

Maddy at the shelter

The Facebook post about a dog at the Memphis shelter read:  I saw her when I was at Memphis Animal Services. She is incredibly sweet. All that she wanted was to be petted. She would close her eyes as if she was in pure ecstasy, as I rubbed her face and body! She definitely has many scars.  I fed her treats right out of my hand and she was so gentle! This girl has had a rough life – please, if someone could find it in their heart to open up their home to this senior dog, you would help this dog live out her final years knowing what a warm bed and a loving heart would feel like.

Maddy Teeth

Maddy’s teeth

Our first question was how was an eleven year old dog ever going to get out of the shelter.  We went to the shelter  to meet her, but took a step back when we saw her for the first time. Again we wondered how she would ever get adopted. It was not her age but rather how she looked. Aesthetics, justly or unjustly, play a crucial role when individuals are looking to adopt a pet. She had cuts and scrapes covering her body, along with what appeared to be a skin infection that started on her chin, progressed down her chest, and onto her belly. She had a limited number teeth and the few that she did still have were quite worn down. And yes, she was heartworm positive too. All and all, the outlook for this poor little girl was rather bleak.

We looked into her big brown eyes and as sweet as they were, we knew that in her current condition, she would be a hard sell to a potential adopter. Swish, swish, swish went her tail. As we discussed the numerous reasons why we should not pull her, she pushed herself up against the bars of the kennel, almost sensing that she needed to plea her case one more time. Swish, swish, swish went her tail, only this time at an enthusiastic, high rate of speed. If we looked at her, talked to her, or petted her, all we could hear was swish, swish, swish. We were not leaving the shelter without filling out her paperwork. There was no way that she, nor our hearts would not let us. Swish, swish, swish went her tail.

Swish, swish, swish

Her foster Mom wrote:  “This dog is special sweet. I picked her up from the shelter and had to go back to work. I put a blanket on the floor next to my desk and for the next couple hours I never had to worry about her wandering around the office. tap tap tap tap tap is all I heard because her tail never stopped. She never left my side.”

We named her Maddy and after all her extensive medical needs were addressed, we found someone who fell in love with her, just as we had. Her new family reports that even though it has been several months, Maddy’s tail has never stopped wagging. Swish, swish, swish.
